About John

My life has always been guided by one idea: responsibility matters. It has shaped every chapter of my career and every decision I’ve made. My name is John Morgan, and responsibility is the thread that connects my years in the military, my work as a pilot and instructor, and my service in local government.

When my wife and I moved to Saluda in 1997, we were drawn to the mountains and the sense of community here. Over time, I saw how much local government influences daily life — sometimes in ways people don’t notice until something changes. When I later served as a City Commissioner, I learned that real leadership begins with listening. Not talking over people, not assuming you know the answer, but taking the time to understand what matters to the community. We didn’t come to these mountains to change them; we came because we value the character and beauty of this place and want to help protect it.

Before settling in Saluda, I spent 21 years in the United States Air Force, beginning during the Vietnam War. My career eventually placed me in one of the most demanding roles in military aviation: flying Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Vice Presidents, and world leaders. In those moments, the stakes were clear. There was no room for ego — only discipline, integrity, and complete focus on the mission. Those experiences shaped how I handle pressure and how I think about trust.

After retiring from the Air Force, I continued flying with Atlas Air as a captain and flight instructor. Teaching new pilots reminded me that clear communication and accountability are essential, whether you’re in a cockpit or any other highstakes environment. As I approached the end of my flying career, I found myself drawn toward serving my community more directly. My background as a trained accountant and my experience managing multimilliondollar military budgets gave me a practical way to contribute. I’ve never seen budgets as just numbers on a page. To me, they represent priorities — what a community values, what it needs, and what it hopes to build. That perspective has shaped how I think about public resources: with precision, care, and a commitment to using them wisely.

Through every stage of my life, responsibility has been the constant. It guided me in the Air Force, in the cockpit, in the classroom, and in local government. It continues to guide me today, as I work to serve the people and the place I’ve called home for nearly three decades.
